Pete Smith is known as the "Godfather of Surfing" for the East Coast. He opened the very first surf shop in Virginia Beach in the early 1960's. The East Coast Surfing Championship (ECSC) started in Long Island in 1962. Pete Smith was able to move the contest to Virginia Beach in 1963, and it is now the longest running surfing competition in the world. Coastal Edge is proud to honor his legacy and the heritage of the surf community that Pete Smith helped grow.
